mario movie review (spoiler free)

I love it, I love it, I love it. The super Mario movie is amazing. This is for Mario fans, Nintendo fans, for kids, and for kids at heart. Even if you are not a Mario fan or just a casual movie goer, I bet you will enjoy this film as well. For what this film is, it is close to perfect as you can get.

To all the parents that is worry about letting their kids see this movie, don’t. The movie is safe to take your kids to. There is no let’s say unnecessary nonsense that your kids don’t need to see.

The movie itself is so beautiful. Kudous to Illumination for creating the film that is pretty as you see in the games. From the mushroom kingdom, Bowser’s castle, Donkey Kong’s land, Rainbow Road, and Brooklyn everything is beautiful. Even all the little details like the question blocks, lava, and fire flowers is great. This is the best-looking adaptation from a video game ever.

The voice acting is fantastic. The only one I thought was flat is Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong. Everyone else is good. The internet went insane when it was announced that Chris Pratt is voicing Mario. He did a good job playing the lead character. Charlie Day and Ayna Taylor-Joy are great as Luigi and Peach. I couldn’t tell that Michael Keegan Key voicing Toad, props to him. The 2nd best one to me is Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong. The best one by far is Jack Black as Bowser. My gosh Jack was prefect. Every emotion Bowser had; Jack played them was great.

Now I do need to talk about the few negatives I had. First there was a couple of lines that Peach said. I won’t spoil them but when she said them, I tilt my head. The Peach we know from the games would never say those things. A lot of people is whining about the paper-thin plot. Yes, it could have a little more story to it but whenever a Mario game had a deep plot to it? I ultimately wanted to a plumber save a kingdom from a fire spitting giant turtle. Beside this is a kids movie. The plot doesn’t need to be complex. This is not citizen Kane. Also there is music from the 80s. that music felt out of place. My biggest issue with the movie was the pacing. It when fast, too fast. The movie could have benefit with 10 to 15 more minutes. With the extra time, the pacing could have slowed down so we can explore the world more and have a bit more interaction between the characters.

Back to the positives. The fight scenes were awesome, especially the rainbow road and the final fight. The movie has so many easter eggs in it, I couldn’t keep count. Beside Jack Black as Bowser there was one more break out star. That star is actually a star. The blue star Luna also stole the show. Overall I love the movie. I will go to the theatre to watch it again. 8.5/10 for me. If you haven’t watch the movie, go see it now.
