save the sega cd

Most of us would agree that the 32X started the downfall of Sega as a console maker. I think that another system also started the downfall. In fact it really actually started the beginning of the end for Sega. It came out two years before the 32X in the USA. It was the failure known as the Sega CD. It was the add on to the genesis that came out in 1992.It only sold a piss poor 2.24 million units worldwide. Sega discontinued it in 1996. There were only about 210 games made for it.

To be with all of you, this shouldn’t had been the case. In my opinion, I do believe that if Sega did it right, the Sega CD would have been a massive success. How would i save the Sega CD from its sad fate? Once again, I will hop into my time machine, travel to the past, and tell Sega how to save the Sega CD.

Should had been its own console

Lets start with the biggest mistake they made. The Sega CD should had been a standalone system. In order to buy the damn thing, you had to own a genesis. With it begin a standalone, first you didn’t have to own a genesis to buy one and second and most important you can make more money. People who don’t want a genesis can buy it.

The design

For the look of it, I would make it a bit larger than the Sega CD X. If you don’t the CD X was the actually standalone Sega CD. It came out in 1994. Only about 5,000 units were made. If this came out instead of the regular Sega Cd maybe it could be a hit. I would add two slots of memory cards. I make it more of a box design like the genesis 2. I will the keep the cartridge slot for RAM cards.

The tech

For the tech, I will just go with what Sega lord X in his save the Sega CD video on YouTube. Please go watch that video.

The marketing

The big marketing mistake that Sega made was heavying pushing FMV (full motion video) games. Many taught had FMV was the future of gaming including Sega. Boy was they were wrong. I would give FMV some love but instead we will mainly focus on the games that people actually wanted.

The games

Every system needs a strong launch line up. The Sega CD will launch will 5 games. I was thinking about having Sonic CD as a pack in game. Instead I will agree with Sega lord X that the first two Sonic games will be on the same CD and that will be the pack in game. The other launch titles will be the cult classic popful mail, Joe Montana football, the infamous night trap, and we will have a sequel to Ristar call Ristar 2. Eternal champions challengers from the dark side will arrive in early 1993. Lunar: the silver star will come mid 1993. Sonic Cd will be our big holiday 1993 title.

Like with my save Saturn and Dreamcast blogs, we will continue our Ips to the Sega CD. We will have all new sequels to streets of rage, outrunners, Phantsay star, Vector man, Comix zone, and so on.
